Effect of defocusing on laser ablation plume observed by laser-induced fluorescence imaging spectroscopy

We used laser-induced fluorescence imaging with a varying beam focal point to observe ablation plumes from metal and oxide samples of gadolinium. The plumes expand vertically when the focal point is far from the sample surface. In contrast, the plume becomes hemispherical when the focal point is on the sample surface. In addition, the internal plume structure and the composition of the ablated atomic and ionic particles also vary significantly. The fluorescence intensity of a plume from a metal sample is greater than that from an oxide sample, which suggests that the number of monatomic species produced in each plume differs. For both the metal and oxide samples, the most intense fluorescence from atomic (ionic) species is observed with the beam focal point at 3-4 mm (2 mm) from the sample surface.

Neutron focusing is an indispensable technique used to compensate for weak signals in experiments under extreme conditions with tiny samples. We describe the development of a thermal neutron focusing device for a typical triple-axis neutron spectrometer. The device has a length of 400 mm and is placed between the second collimator and the sample position. The focal length is 150 mm from the downstream end of the device. The optic has 18 pieces of the circular blade consisting of 3m NiC/Ti neutron supermirrors. The extensions of the end of each blade meet at the sample position, namely the focal point. Neutrons undergo successive reflection through the same angle from the inner surface of each blade and arrive at the sample position. The test results show that the gain of the neutron intensity at the sample position increases by a factor of two or more for the neutron energy below 30.5 meV.

Sub-millimeter synchrotron X-ray focusing by crystal bender

Yoneda, Yasuhiro; Matsumoto, Norimasa; Furukawa, Yukito*; Ishikawa, Tetsuya*

Physica Scripta, T115, p.995 - 997, 2005/00

Sagittal focusing is known as one of the most efficient focusing methods for synchrotron X-rays which increases the photon density at the sample position. Results are reported on the performance of a fixed height exit bender with an unribbed silicon (311) crystal. The fixed height exit was achieved by using a 4-point bending mechanism. This bending mechanism is designed for the SPring-8 standard double crystal monochromator (DCM) of bending-magnet beamlines and the bender is installed as a second crystal of the DCM. By using unribbed crystal, the focusing beam size was kept 0.5 mm in the energy ranges from 35 - 60 keV. Since mirrors for high-energy X-rays are still under development at the moment, focusing techniques by crystal bender are demanded for many practical applications.

A new project aiming for a breakthrough in biotechnology and materials science has been proposed at TIARA(Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application) facilities of JAERI. Heavy ion beams with an energy of more than a hundred MeV/n will contribute to remarkable progress in breeding of plants and development of new materials. We have started designing a new superconducting AVF cyclotron with a bending limit of 900 and a focusing limit of 300. The cyclotron magnet is being designed to cope with acceleration of both the heavy ions and 300 MeV protons.

Ablation plume of oxide samples of gadolinium was observed by means of laser-induced fluorescence imaging technique for varying the beam focal point. The observed plume was vertically expanded when the focal point was far from the sample surface; in contrast, it varied to be hemispherical shape when the focal point was on the sample surface. In addition, the internal plume structure and the composition of the ablated atomic and ionic species were also varied significantly.
